NMMS Scholarship is a centrally sponsored scheme offered by the Department of School Education & Literacy. It was launched by the government in May 2008 for the meritorious students of the country. National Means Cum Merit Scholarship 2022 is open for the students of class 9th to 12th who come from economically weak households. The students can apply for this scholarship through the official National Scholarship Portal. Its main objective is to improve education AK level by reducing the drop out of class 8.

The aim of the National Means Cum Merit Scholarship is to minimize the number of drop-outs from the schools and encourage the students to pursue higher education. NMMS Scholarship has been invited by the Department of School Education and Literacy, Government of India for a scholarship for class 9. Students who have secured 55% end or equivalent grade in class 4 are eligible for this. Its main objective is to provide financial assistance to students belonging to economically weaker sections.

National Means Cum Merit Scholarship has been done to encourage the students of class 4, so that the number of dropouts can be reduced. Students can complete their secondary-level education. National Means Cum Merit Scholarship – Eligibility Criteria

The students need to satisfy certain conditions in order to apply for this scholarship.

  • The candidate must enroll in a regular and full-time approved course only.
  • The family annual income of the candidate should not be more than Rs.1.5 Lakhs from all sources.
  • Candidate must maintain good behavior as certified as the Head of the Institute and continue their studies from the Government or Government-aided Institute.
  • The candidate should not have a full-time or part-time job.
  • The candidate must get absent without any proper leave.
  • If the selected candidate leaves his/her course within one month of enrolment then, no scholarship will be provided to them.
  • The candidates must continue their studies in India only. No scholarship for abroad education is provided under this scholarship.
  • After, expiration of the 12 months of the academic session that the candidate has applied for no claim for the scholarship arrears will be entertained.
  • The candidate must take admission in a new class or course within three months of the declaration of the results of the previous class or course.
  • If the scholarship is canceled on the basis of the rules of disbursement, it cannot be revived under conditions.
  • The scholarship may be canceled in case of any gap in the academic sessions due to any reason.
  • The rules and regulations of the scholarship will be changed from time to time when required. The candidates must keep the track of any such changes as they will also bind them.
  • If the student is unable to appear for the final exam due to any serious illness then, he/she should send a medical certificate within three months of falling sick through the Head of the Institute. The medical certificate should be issued by any registered Medical Practitioner and they should mention the specific duration of illness.
  • In such cases, the candidates will be provided the facility to continue the same course from the same institute only if the Head of the Institute certifies that the overall performance of the student has been 50% or above during that complete year.

National Means Cum Merit Scholarship – Documents Required

The students need to submit the following documents while applying for this scholarship.

  • Two latest passport size
  • Aadhar card
  • Domicile certificate
  • Income certificate from the Competent Authority
  • Photocopy of SC/ST Certificate
  •  Mark-sheet of the last qualifying exam
  • Disability Status Certificate from the Competent Authority (If applicable)

National Means Cum Merit Scholarship – Application Procedure

The students can follow the application procedure given below to apply for this scholarship.

  • First of all, the students need to visit the official National Scholarship Portal. The homepage of the portal will open on your screen.

  • On the homepage, the students need to click on the “New Registration” tab.
  • A new page will open, read all the instructions given on that page carefully and then, click on the “Continue” tab.
  • A new registration form will appear on your screen, there fill all the details like your name, address, mobile number, domicile, gender, scholarship category, scholarship type, date of birth, and email Id.
  • Then, provide your personal bank account details like Account number, Bank name, and IFSC code.
  • Select Account number or Aadhar card number as the identification option and click on the “Register” option.
  • An OTP will be sent to your registered mobile number for verification purpose.
  • Enter the OTP in the given space and click on the “Login” option.
  • A new application form will open on your screen, fill all the asked details accurately.
  • Now, complete the application process by clicking on the “Submit” tab.
  • An application ID will be generated by the system. Write it down for any future reference.

Note: The students are advised that should fill all the details correctly and check them twice before submitting the form as there are no provisions of change after the submission is done. The students must also keep in mind to fill only one form as multiple applications will lead to the cancellation of the form.

NMMS Scholarship – Selection Procedure

The students are selected under this scholarship through the following selection process.

  • The Government of each Sate and Union Territory will conduct their own exam for the selection of candidates for the National Means-cum Merit Scholarship.
  • This state level exam consists of following tests.
    • Mental Ability Test (MAT)
    • Scholarship Aptitude Test (SAT)
  • The students must have secured minimum 55% marks in their 7th standard for appearing in the selection test (5% relaxation for ST/SC students).
  • The students must be pursuing full-time regular classes from a Government/Government-Aided/Local Body school.
  • Mental Ability Test: This section consists of minimum 90 questions and test the verbal, non-verbal and meta-cognitive abilities logic, critical thinking and reasoning. The questions may be based on analogy, numerical series, hidden figures, classification, pattern perception etc.
  • Scholarship Aptitude Test: This section consists of minimum 90 questions based on subjects like science, maths and social studies as taught in 7th and 8th standard.
  • Duration of Test: The students will be given 90 minutes for completing the exam. The children with any disability will be given extra time.

NMMS Scholarship – Rewards

The students receive following rewards under this scholarship.

  • The students can avail for any one scholarship under this scheme.
  • The candidates need to open a bank account in any public sector bank preferably SBI or any scheduled bank with core banking facilities.
  • Students must secure minimum 55% marks in classes 9th and 11th and 60% marks in lass 10th for continuing scholarship in the next class (5% relaxation for ST/SC students).
  • The Governments of respective states and union territories will send the list pf beneficiaries online on the official portal. The Ministry will then scrutinize their proposal and release the funds from the Annual Provision Budget to SBI. The SBI is the implementing bank which will then transfer the scholarship amount directly into the accounts of the selected candidates.
  • The SBI will send the scholarship amount of Rs.12000 in one go as soon as they receive the funds and beneficiaries list.
  • Some branches of the SBI will co-ordinate with Department of State Education regarding the payment to the students.

NMMS Scholarship – Results

The results are calculated in the following way to select the meritorious students.

  • The students must secure minimum 40% marks in an aggregate of both the MAT and SAT test in order to get selected.
  • The ST/SC students need minimum 32% marks to get selected.
  • Students must have secured a minimum 55% marks in the 8th standard at the time of selection (5% relaxation for ST/SC students).
  • The students must fulfill all the eligibility criteria to get selected for this scholarship.

NMMS Scholarship – Terms and Conditions

The students need to keep in mind the following rules and regulations regarding this scholarship.

  • Students must pass their class 8th and take admission in class 9th to be eligible for this scholarship.
  • The students pursuing diploma/certificate courses are not eligible for this scholarship.
  • The scholarship is payable to the students for a maximum of four years from classes 9th to 12th for pursuing studies only in India.
  • To continue the scholarship, the students must pass class 9th to take admission in class 10th and must pass class 11th to get admission in class 12th in the 1st attempt with a minimum of 55% marks (5% relaxation for ST/SC students).
  • The candidate must secure a minimum of 60% marks in their 10th standard exam to continue their scholarship (5% relaxation for ST/SC students).
  • If the school does not conduct any examination at the end of class 9th or class 11th then the scholarship will continue only on the submission of a certificate regarding this information by the Head of the Institute.
  • The selection test for this scholarship will be done for the 9th standard students in the month of November every year as a separate test by the State government or Union Territory Government.
  • A Technical Support Group (TSG) consisting of consultants may be formed for assisting the proper implementation of the scheme.
  • The scholarship may be reviewed after three years.
  • The scholarship will be closely monitored by the Department after regular intervals.
